"Our Campaign" is the centennial renovation of our parishThe NeedOur Lady of Mount Carmel Parish was founded in May 1907. By 1911, the present church was built on William Street, and later expanded in the 1930's to accommodate the needs of the Italian community. The building is a classic Romanesque design, wonderfully proportioned. Over the years most of the beautiful decoration that adorned the church has been lost. Some of the fundamental structural elements are aging and need renovation. A committee of parishioners came together to plan our centennial celebration. As a theme, we have chosen Renewing for our Future. Guided by the professional architectural skills of a parishioner, and with the input of a "design sub-committee," we have developed a restoration and preservation plan for the church itself. The Proposed SolutionOur existing church has a very special place in the lives of parishioners. It has been the spiritual heart and sacramental home for individuals and families for almost a century. It needs restoration and preservation for the sake of future generations. The proposed interior design is a partial restoration that is intentionally reminiscent of the church's original beauty. New furnishings and restored decoration will help inspire and uplift our worship experience. The church's mechanical systems (electricity, heat, etc.) will be updated for operations that are more efficient and to make a safer environment for all of us. It is evident that our pews and kneelers need to be replaced. We intend to reconfigure the aisles and seating plan to facilitate our liturgical activity. New first-floor restrooms in a convenient location are essential. Naturally, some long overdue exterior pointing and painting are necessary. All elements of this project try to make our church more friendly and accessible for persons with special needs. The CostIt appears that the cost will be around $1,600,000. A fundraising campaign is the only way we will be able to fund this project. None of this is possible without the generosity of parishioners and those who trace their spiritual and cultural roots to Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Renewing for our Future is an exciting and challenging moment for us. The physical restoration of Mount Carmel Church is the 'brick and mortar' aspect of our 100th anniversary. It is symbolic of the spiritual and social renewal of our family of faith as well. We need your help and generosity to accomplish our goal. We especially need your prayerful support.
